When 'Boston Gear' Meant Celtics Hoodies and Gearbox Parts

It’s not a motor. It’s the thing that tells the motor how fast to turn. You buy one based on the motor’s nameplate data—voltage, phase, full-load amps, and sometimes base frequency—plus the application’s torque requirements and the environment around the drive.

The wrong VFD won’t just underperform. It can trip a breaker, run too hot, or simply not work with the motor you have. And because most motor suppliers don’t want to resell an installed electronic drive that was ordered incorrectly, you’re often stuck with a restocking fee.

My mistake cost us $73.50 in restocking, plus $81 for overnight shipping on the correct drive. But that was small compared to the time. The line sat waiting for an extra two days. Our maintenance lead had to reshuffle two other jobs to cover it. That’s the part that hurts.

The Brushless DC Motor Controller: A Problem I Handled Better

The same order included a brushless DC motor controller.   • When the word “gear” appears, ask whether it’s the brand, a mechanical part, or a sweatshirt.
  • Check the return policy before ordering. A 25% restocking fee changes the math on a “quick” decision.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. I’ve said that to every new person who takes over this role. It’s not a slogan. It’s the difference between a $73 restocking fee and a quiet week.

The Celtics Gear Order That Finally Made Sense
